The Girls’ Service League (GSL) Director of Educational Grants is pleased to announce the 2017-2018 Grant Application Process for scholarships specifically for women wanting to start or finish their undergraduate degree. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1000, which will be distributed starting fall 2017 semester. These scholarships are part of the Girls’ Service League's initiative “Women Empowering Women Through Higher Education.”

NEW (to be considered you must return a Letter of Intent now to applying for grant)
Final due date for Letter of Intent is January 27, 2017

This year, we are adding another document to the application process and that is a Letter of Intent. This allows us to see who is applying for a GSL grant and the amount of participation in each county we serve. Please click here to open the Letter of Intent, complete the short form and attach it an e-mail addressed to office@girlsservice.org. Send the e-mail as soon as possible and you will receive an email welcoming you to the GSL application process.

Eligibility requirements for applicants

  1. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen with legal residency in Johnson, Parker or Tarrant County, Texas for a period of at least one (1) year prior to filing this application
  2. Applicant must be attending or applying for acceptance to an accredited Texas college
  3. Applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree (AA, AS, BA or BS degree) at a college or university within the State of Texas (GSL does not provide funding for technical or vocational schools).

There are separate eligibility requirements for high school seniors, college students and women seeking to advance their education:

  • High School Seniors - to be eligible, applicant must be a high school graduate (or graduating senior by Summer 2017), have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 and have been accepted for fall 2017 enrollment;
  • College Students - to be eligible, applicant must be enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year college/university, have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 and have been accepted for fall 2017 enrollment;
  • Women Seeking to Advance Education - to be eligible, applicant must be a high school graduate, have a general education diploma (G.E.D.) or have previously attended college and after a long absence, have been accepted for an undergraduate degree program for fall 2017.


  Selection criteria for all scholarships include:
  • Academic performance (including transcripts);
  • Community activities and service;
  • Letters of recommendation;
  • Application information;
  • Financial information and an essay.


  IMPORTANT (prevent your application from being rejected)!  
  • All applications and required documentation must be postmarked by Thursday, February 2, 2017.
  • Individuals may submit only one application per award period.
  • Application must be completed using a PDF application (see instructions for free Adobe Reader in Documentation section).
  • Letters of Recommendation will be sent out to the contact information listed on your application and are due by Thursday, February 16, 2017
    (please follow up with your contact to ensure they have sent the Letter of Recommendation).
  • If you have recently received a GSL scholarship and will be attending school fall 2017, you will receive a continuing scholarship form via e-mail, which will be sent out April 2017.

On your computer, with your mouse move curser over file, right-click on the file and save to desktop or to a folder designated by you to manage your documents. WARNING: If you open the file in the browser it may not work or you could lose all the information you entered on the form.

Using a touchpad, tap the link to open the file. Once file opens tap it again and select open with in the top left side of your screen and from the icon window select copy to Adobe Acrobat. This will allow you to complete the highlighted fillable form.

The PDF files are fillable forms and require Adobe Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat Pro. To get the free version of Adobe Reader go to www.adobe.com to download the application. Handwritten applications will be rejected.

Technical Issues - UPDATES

This notice is in regard to the application essay, which is to be sent with your application and other required documents due in February. The essay on the application, references a cover letter that explains requested information. Essay explaining your need for the scholarship and how you feel college will help you reach your life goals (format as defined in cover letter)   The cover letter was changed to the Application Instruction document and updated on our server December 6. I have attached the document for your information and the revised application form has been posted to our server (http://girlsserviceleague.org/images/PDF/2017-2018-GSL-Scholarship-Application.pdf).   Please make sure you review the revised Application Instruction document and should you have any question, please do not hesitate to call me at 817-738-9092 or e-mail grants@girlsserviceleague.org.

We have received Letters of Intent from potential applicants that were blank, typos on the e-mail address listed on the document or not saved and sent with the correct name format. If you have not received an e-mail regarding receipt of your Letter of Intent or updates to posted documents, you should call the GSL office immediately.
